Who We Are

Our roots are firmly planted in the Chesapeake Bay region, primarily in Virginia, where we have witnessed the profound impact that environmental health, social equity, and community empowerment have on creating sustainable futures. We are passionate about addressing the complex challenges that affect our region—challenges that require integrated and collaborative solutions.

By focusing on five key areas—environmental stewardship, animal welfare, rural equity, food security, and disaster recovery—we aim to tackle these challenges comprehensively. We support initiatives that not only address individual issues but also promote synergy among different sectors, leading to more substantial and lasting impacts.

As a proactive and collaborative funder, we are committed to empowering communities by:

  • Listening and Engaging: We work closely with the communities we serve to understand their unique needs, strengths, and aspirations.

  • Supporting Innovative Solutions: We invest in creative approaches and initiatives that drive positive change and can be scaled or replicated.

  • Building Partnerships: We believe in the power of collaboration and actively seek partnerships with nonprofits, community groups, other funders, and stakeholders who share our vision.

  • Advocating for Change: We use our voice and resources to advocate for policies and practices that promote sustainability, equity, and resilience.

Our dedication extends beyond grantmaking. We strive to be a catalyst for collaboration and innovation, fostering networks and relationships that amplify our collective impact. Guided by values of integrity, inclusivity, and stewardship, we are committed to making a meaningful difference in the communities we serve.

Our Approach

At The DogWood Fund, we adopt a holistic and collaborative approach to philanthropy, recognizing that complex challenges require comprehensive and integrated solutions. Our strategy is built upon the following principles:

Intersectionality
We prioritize initiatives that intersect multiple focus areas, understanding that issues like environmental degradation, social inequity, and food insecurity are deeply linked. By supporting projects that address these connections, we foster holistic community resilience.

Collaboration and Partnership
We believe that working together amplifies impact. We actively collaborate with other funders, nonprofits, community organizations, and stakeholders to pool resources, expertise, and networks. This collective effort enhances our ability to drive meaningful and lasting change.

Community Empowerment
Empowering local communities is at the heart of our approach. We support grassroots initiatives and encourage community-led solutions, ensuring that those most affected are central to the decision-making process.

Innovation and Sustainability
We invest in innovative projects that offer sustainable solutions to complex challenges. By embracing new ideas and practices, we aim to address root causes and promote long-term positive outcomes.

Adaptability and Learning
We are committed to continuous learning and adaptation. By evaluating our efforts and staying responsive to changing needs and circumstances, we strive to improve our effectiveness and the impact of our investments.
